Variation #67

This copy comes courtesy of Nick Pimentel. Here’s what Nick had to say about it:

Here is my copy of Fear of Smell.

I got my copy when it first came out at a show my band (Anasarca) was playing in Baltimore or Washington DC.  Some distro had a few copies and I was instantly drawn to this particular one with the inverted crosses, pentagram, and the “Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certification” because I was a secret headbanger.

The photos are not that great, but the back has “Only 5 made!!” and “featuring John Woods”

Heh, this one is currently at Double Decker Records in Allentown, PA – probably for a decent price. Last time I was there was in 2005 when we went to Philly, and I was really impressed. Certainly the sort of store that would drive me into the poorhouse if it were near me.

Funny thing about this copy is that it bears a strong resemblance to Variation #63. Also this is the second copy with “File Under Fuck” stickers, that I’ve seen on some Gloom Records (off the top of my head, the US tour pressing of  Total Fury-13 Songs, which I picked up at Thrashfest 2003). Gratuitous use of the word “fuck” as well. Fuck.

Here’s a submission from Nick Turner, one of the proud owners of the first batch of tinsel laden comps. Here’s what he had to say about it…

Bought for $4.99 or so at Rhino Records in Claremont, CA around 1996. Most likely arrived there via MITB or related folks but that’s just a guess based on the location. “Fear of Smell” used to appear there fairly often.

This e-mail submission comes courtesy of John Andrew – who tells this tale (which will be familiar to those of you who’ve been around the distro block):

I bought it when it came out from a good friend who was acting as a “distributor” of such releases. Buying in “bulk” from Vermiform then selling them for little, if any, profit. Making money off your fellow hardcore brothers and sisters was simply not acceptable behavior! His name was “basement Jason”and lived (in the basement) of the Crustee Haus in Phoenix Arizona.

Thanks John!

Welcome back, from a bit of a prolonged break. Yes, I ran out of covers to post. Then I got a couple submissions, but my life fell apart. Now all seems to be right with the world, so I’ll post some up whenever I get them. So with that said, if you know of a copy out there, that’s not up here, by all means take some pictures, and submit it!

This copy comes courtesy of Charles Maggio, proprietor of Gern Blandsten Records, and was a part of Rorschach, who are on this comp. Buy the Rorschach and Big Boys records he’s done… excellent stuff. In fact Rorschach were one of the best bands I’ve seen. On tour with Born Against and Antischism in 1991, they made my summer and I still think that they blew both of their tour-mates off the stage the two nights I saw them. Also, Keith (one of Rorschach’s two guitarists) was one of the nicest guys to have a conversation with.  Anyways, here’s what Charles had to say about the comp:

Hey Man
Saw your blog. I will photograph my personal copy soon (it has tinsel around the edge) but until then.

This copy was originally owned by Will of Chainsaw safety Records. It is going on EBAY tomorrow.

It is rather Plain, but it is certainly Sam McPheeters handwriting on the front.
Back cover has “Only 5 Made” “Featuring John Woods”, and “File Under Fuck” from the RORSCHACH remain sedate LP stickers.

Charles

This copy bears a certain orange tape resemblance to Variation #49, Variation #48Variation #27 and Variation #17 .

Here’s one grabbed from ye olde ebay – it went unsold with a starting bid of $35 from a seller in Portland. The cover reminds me of a Rocket From The Crypt thing… maybe it’s the racing stripes?

This selection comes courtesy of Imants, record collector extrordinaire and guy who has a vicious heckle. Apparently the interns at Vermiform were unpaid child labourers on the day these were decorated. Billy, age 8, would be 24 or so now. Hope this comp scared him straight to a degree and away from drugs (what else would Infest tell this kid??)

Only 5 Made!

Here’s the submission from Miss Kerin, which I posted an auction link to a week or two back. It was originally submitted to Ben Is Dead fanzine for review – to which Kerin was unsure of if she wrote one. Be cool to see a review if there is one out there from the time.

Inside the cover

Well, this one is kinda’ neat. Copped it from ebay, thanks to a heads up from Tom Hopkins, illustrious man of the hour. Clearly, Iggy Scam, of Scam Fanzine had a hand in the decoration of this cover. Fear of Smell (aka Scam is the Bastard) … fucking funny. Check out the inside of the cover where Iggy suggests we should shoot up puke.
