Again, another find from Matt’s basement, via Alex the blog’s second in command. We’ve seen vertical lines elsewhere: Variation #118. And the triangle A’s: Variation #42, Variation #102, and Variation #101 (with 102 and 101 clearly coming from the same batch). I’m sure we’ll see these geometric hipster prognosticators defecate, I mean decorate some covers in the future. Again, plain back with the side a and side b stickers.

OK we’ve been scanning and snooping in peoples flickrs and photobuckets and coming up dry (although we did see what you did on the weekend and we have to report that it wasn’t that interesting). Coming up dry on Fear of Smell covers, then the second in command Alex found these. I hate to get all name-droppy, but they belong to Matt, who plays in a fairly important band on this comp. So these will probably never come out of the storage they’re in, and if they do, well, bid hard. So thanks to Alex and Matt for unearthing these, and helping out the cause. In fact the next five copies will all be from the same spot, and they all have a blank back with the standard two sticker sets.

Onto the cover, well this one has handwriting like the scribbles on Variation #59  and Variation #107 - I would’ve included links to a couple other scribble type covers, but they were done in green marker, which makes me honestly think they could’ve been someone else – unless someone fills in the story, no one will really know.

Here’s an e-mail submission via  Andrew.

Just saw your blog. Great idea. Here’s some pics of my copy of the record. Sorry they’re sideways!

What are the chances that the drawing is an action shot of a fart? Or… ?

Actually it looks a bit like a tiger lily to me… but maybe it’s a rorschach-test type question – it reveals much more about the viewer than it does the actual artiste. The back cover resembles the spray can work of Variation #75 and Variation #45. Maybe even Variation #11?

Another one from ebay via Popsike. This one sold for $39 in April 2013. Someone sent a kiss with this LP, probably for their love of the Man Is The Bastard track, or even Sam and Joe.  I’m surprised at the amount of tape I’ve seen on covers to this point, it seemed that tape rather than glue was a common fixatif. Maybe all the glue was huffed before it could’ve been applied to the covers?

Again, if you have this copy you should send a better picture with the back cover as well.

Here’s another one that got missed from ebay – courtesy of Popsike - German seller, got 21 Euros for it in 2010. This one’s a bit unique in that the title is centred – most of the Rorschach recycles are over the Rorschach part of the sleeve. If you bought it, feel free to send a better picture.

“Actually this record isn’t as stupid as it looks! I heard Garth Brooks thinks it’s quite groovy! If you’re in that dancing mood… buy it. FEAR OF SMELL! Yes, siree, that’s the title of it”

This one’s off of the bay, and sold for what looks like $19.99. Most excellent. Hand writing looks a lot like Variation #29 and possibly Variation #6 (look at the capital F, and the loopy lowercase L’s).

“Oi Oi Oi Vey” All Jewish Orthodox Punk Compilation!”

Chris stumbled upon the blog and posted his version – which bears a resemblance to Variation #105, Variation #40, Variation #37, and Variation #113 - they all have bubbly letters, and if you look at the bottom of the E in Fear, it’s got a similar bump in it over several of those similar. I read somewhere that NYC has the highest concentration of orthodox Jews outside of Israel. When I visited in the mid 90′s – that certainly was something I noticed on the lower east side and in Brooklyn.

Chris also is part of a design firm, so if you need your firm designed, contact him through their website. Thanks Chris!

Well, this is probably amongst my favourites, because Rorschach Remain Sedate is such a killer record that hit me right at the right point in the early 90′s. Took me forever to get a copy on vinyl as when the band toured around they didn’t have the vinyl yet (or had sold out on tour) and only had cassettes. There’s a whole new category for these ones, so you can sort by that to see Variation #20 and Variation #68. Yes, I do know it looks a whole hell of a lot like #68, but it’s not, look at the tape job pasting the MSPaint “Fear of Smell” – they end in different spots.

If you want and/or need it – wander on down to Double Decker Records and spend the $25 on it. Independent record stores always need your business, and Double Decker is one of the best stores on the east coast for punk and hardcore. You may even see Alex taking pictures of Fear of Smell’s that end up on here – which is what he did here!

“I can’t believe I’m going to kiss a dog.

At least you know what you’re kissing”

I just can’t believe I’m gonna suck a rubber!

At least you know what you’re sucking!”

Well, all’s fair in puppets, sex and war I guess. Or that’s what Meet The Feebles taught me. This one’s a clever bit of juxtaposition and comes courtesy of Double Decker Records and our man in the field Alex. Happy holidays everyone and may all your stockings be stuffed with the fear of smell.

Here’s another ebay one, caught by me (yeah, I know I’m not just relying on submissions!).

I’ve gotta say, this is one of the weirdest covers I’ve seen, the text seems like some avant-garde lyrics to some whacked out 70′s prog rock bullshit and the taped on high school artwork just makes me think that this might, in fact, be the work of some schoolkid bored out of their mind in class, then disposed of into the field as they ran from a pack of bullies. Later picked up by some late teen early twenties punks and pasted to a compilation to cover up the fact that they tried to use markers on a glossy cover but ended up with a smear of ink.

This is currently available (for the next 10 hours) on ebay here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fear-of-Smell-VERMIFORM-Moss-Icon-INFEST-ULTRA-RARE-EMO-HARDCORE-HANDMADE-/141108644912?pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item20dabb0c30 at the low low cost of $25 opening bid, or $100 buy it now.
