Variation #173

This one was posted on Instagram by Matt Needles, who’s contributed before, if I remember correctly! A plain one, but with joined “L”s, which is quirky. Love the autumn palette of colors.

From Land and Sea Oakland’s Instagram page. Clearly a riff on, uhhh, the name’s escaping me now, Killing Time? Oh yeah, Rest In Pieces. Will post better pictures if they ever come a knockin’. Interesting that someone in the Vermiform circle chose to do a cover based on Rest In Pieces who were associated with Sick Of It All, who at the time were at odds, particularly with Sam McPheeters over some criticism he levied at them for being on a “major” label. In hindsight I’m sure that both sides would agree it was ridiculous, but hey, that was the puritanical 90’s (some of which was good).

Additional Ebay Shots of Note
So this was from this ebay auction which ended up selling for $11.99
This was the quote from the auction:
Various ” FEAR OF SMELL ” comp LP. All killer no filler. Original first press with hand drawn cover. Inner sleeve. In excellent condition, I am the original owner.
Not the most informative, but hey, it’s not incorrect. I’m also in the process of adding more categories, so that similar ones can be grouped together, so I’m stopping linking to the back catalog so to speak. Look for that popping up as time permits!

Pretty sure this was from ebay sometime earlier this year. Sorry kids, I’ve been slipping!

What better way to celebrate spring than to look at an album cover that perhaps, harkens back to freshly cut lawns, or a beautiful field? No, not feeling it either? OK allergies are fucking hell, and welcome to a pollen nightmare.

Annnnd Alex sent this one in too – clearly from Instagram’s yesterdaysheroes. Looks like this, and Variation #8 are closely related. From the Mike Bell(?) presents, to the quotes around Fear of Smell… oh yeah, the clincher being the 3/3 in the bottom corner. Seeing as #8 has 1/3 – someone out there, probably in California (Stamford region perhaps?) has 2/3. C’mon folks, dig through your old records and see if yours is, uh, #2.

“US Army is full of pansys and wimps”
So this comes courtesy of e-mail from Deanna Koerner, here’s her story:
Here’s pics of my copy of Fear of Smell. I got it at a basement show in Milwaukee, probably in 1993, when one of the bands was playing. Rorschach? Moss Icon? Can’t remember, but I’m sure I could find out. I remember they sold out of the albums at the show and I felt lucky I got one!
I’m pretty sure that both Rorschach and Moss Icon were on tour during 1993, so either one’s a good guess (and probably would’ve been a great show). Either way, this one is really unique in that the back cover got a treatment as well – which is really, really rare (well in so far as out of the 160+ we’ve seen, only a few have decorated back covers).
John Wayne, who MDC have said was a nazi, here sports a really cool rockabilly coif, with full on mutton chops, several ear piercings and a snidely whiplash pencil moustache that is reserved for creeps (and John Waters, who is probably the only guy who can pull off that look without being a creep).

Caught this earlier this year on Instagram video and had to try and grab a quick screen shot. No idea what the back cover looks like either. Hmmm. Lipstick? Or just crayon? Who knows.

“I am not fuckin’ drunk”
Crayons are a beast to try and draw hands/fingers, so fuck it, draw a mouse like creature with a flask and a cigarette. Last one from the Mid-90’s group, this one posted by Justin Sitner.
