So here’s the notice I got on the “About” page:

Hi there, I am liquidating my record collection this week, and I’m offering up my copy of Fear of smell.
You can my erupting penis here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170976275792

And on the actual auction here’s some more information:

Only 1000 made, and each cover a labor of pervy love. Mine is particularly clever in that it upcycles a Jack and the Beanstalk graphic so that the beanstalk has prickly haired balls and an ejaculating penis head. 20 years later, it is still hilarious- maybe even more so today.

In 1993, I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Chez Hiltz scene. There was a show about once a week in John’s house, just 5 miles away from where I lived with my mom. Some shows were easier to find out about than others, but I had the honor of getting a call when something was going on. And because of that I was able to see most of the bands featured on this comp in a tiny basement room. Native Nodd was one of the especially mind blowing bands to see live. Rorchach played there quite regularly, and my sister (12 years my junior) has cred among the twenty something Brooklynites because I would take her to those shows when she was about 4 years old, where I definitely damaged her view of the world just a little, and in the best possible way.

(track listing for the comp)

I am liquidating my record collection, holding almost nothing back, starting with LP’s. If this goes well, I’ll do 7″s next. It funny, doing this has stirred up a lot of emotions.

I’m just done serving as custodian to things. I’m simply seeking a more zen-like existence, completely focused on tattooing. So, I’m looking for new homes for this vinyl I amassed, mostly in the 90’s. These records have been safely stored for about 2 decades.

The back is a similar to most event – two tracklisting stickers and a large “Only 5 Made”. The auction picture isn’t so hot, so no sense really posting it here.

Happy new year!

Variation #108

Received this from Alan Marshall – who

Bought my copy from a guy in Portsmouth UK a couple of years ago

So, from Portsmouth to the Internets to this very blog. Looks like my personal copy, which I thought we would’ve seen more of these cut and paste ones.

“Typical Fear of Smell purchaser”

“Mommy bought it for me for x-mas & I hate it boo-hoo”

So does that mean that Leo Ferrandino, Fear of Smell collector extrordinaire, is Bill Clinton? Quite possibly. Either way, this one resides in Leo’s collection who bought it recently and thought enough of the blog to send it in. Clearly this has a connection to Variation #25, although I wouldn’t have recognized the younger Clinton had Leo not pointed it out.

Here’s another copy that looks somewhat like  Variation #67 and Variation #31. Here’s what Dave Brown said about his acquisition (and merger?):

Got it when it came out from a shop called Sound on Sound in Highland Park, NJ.

Close Up – “We’re Going to Play in Our Underwear”

Dwayne Dixon sent in this copy, and here’s what he had to write about it:

I discovered your amazing site the other day and am finally getting a chance to send you photos of my FOS comp.  I’m pretty sure I got my copy from Charles Maggio while hanging out with him and Jon Hiltz in C’s basement.  I was really siked on this comp since it represented the diversity and intimacy of the early 90s punk scene in Jersey, NY, and Philly that I was deeply involved in.  The Sam & Joe freak-out was seriously the best track and while on tour with Policy of 3 and Shotmaker we’d scream “Where little dogs wear suits & ties!” randomly at  strangers.  Delightful.

Variation #68

Front Cover

This one comes from Sex/Vid magnate RJ. No I don’t know what magnate means either, or why someone who has a bunch of sexual videos would want to be one either. Maybe it’s a good thing? Either way, here’s another leftover Remain Sedate cover, much like Variation #20. Like I said over there, it’s one of my favourite covers because let’s face it, Remain Sedate is one of my favourite records. Think I ran through about five copies of the dubbed tape.

This copy comes courtesy of Nick Pimentel. Here’s what Nick had to say about it:

Here is my copy of Fear of Smell.

I got my copy when it first came out at a show my band (Anasarca) was playing in Baltimore or Washington DC.  Some distro had a few copies and I was instantly drawn to this particular one with the inverted crosses, pentagram, and the “Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certification” because I was a secret headbanger.

The photos are not that great, but the back has “Only 5 made!!” and “featuring John Woods”

Here’s another early batch one in really clean condition – here’s what Landon Yerby had to say about his copy:

I was going through my old records today, got to this LP.  Was curious about the actual pressings, came across your site.  Lot of fun browsing the other versions out of there.  This LP, not the best tracks from these bands at all.  But it holds the DIY concept of the scene down to the fullest.  Anyway, I was lucky enough to get my copy of Fear of Smell for $4.99 in the used bin.  Record shop called Plan 9, in Richmond VA.  And crazy to read on your page, that there were 30 to 40 of the tinseled borders.

Crazy how many of these sold for around $5, worldwide.

“Perhaps it is risky to sleep in a room with full blooming sunflowers” – Darby Crash, 1974

Despite the faux-quote being attributed to Darby Crash, who would’ve been Jan Paul Beahm at the time, a great copy that was up on ebay a couple months ago and went for $20.

I’ve been spacing out putting up new contributions, as we’re down to the last few ones in the reservoir. Feel free to contribute (e-mail: dietsociety (at) yahoo.com) and get your name in lights for fifteen minutes, or alternately, eternity. Another Paulc contribution, this time he

bought it for $13.99 in 1994 as a rare out of print record.
